Lame spams of the day: confirmation from [insert social network name]

April 23, 2012 by Robert 4 Comments

Is it a trend or just me?  In the past 2 days I’ve received spams in the form of confirmations from MySpace, Habbo, Tagged, and Foursquare.  They don’t look related, but it’s an odd coincidence.  Here they are:

1) Subject: Please confirm your Myspace account cancellation
Sender: Myspace (noreply@message.sease.com)
Text:
You’re… leaving us?

Sure you’re ready to let go of your friends, music, and that profile design you spent so much time creating? Canceling your account means your profile and all your content will be removed from Myspace and you can’t get it back!

IF YOU NO LONGER WISH TO CANCEL YOUR ACCOUNT please click the link. (link leads to http://medssaletraining.com/)

We will not cancel your account unless you follow this instructions. Why not preserve your profile, playlists and photos by deleting your friends and changing your privacy setting to “Only my friends?” That way, you can still enjoy using Myspace Music and Video and if you ever want to come back, it’s here waiting for you!

See you around,
Your friends at Myspace

(I particularly like the version of MySpace’s logo on this one).

2) Subject: Heather Miller has sent you a new private message
Sender: Myspace (noreply@message.myspace.com)
Text:

3) Subject: Sliona K sent you a message…
Sender: Tagged (Tagged@taggedmail.com)
Text:
You have a new message!
Sliona K says: Hi, do you remember me? Can you…

4) Subject: Habbo user “Brenda” has sent you a message
Sender: Habbo Hotel (auto-contact@habbo.com)
Text:
Hello, robert@rlweiner.com

5) Subject: Glenys Scott is now your friend
Sender: foursquare (noreply@foursquare.com)
Text:
Hey there – Just a heads up that Glenys Scott has approved your friend request on foursquare.

I have had almost exactly the same experience. Wondering what triggered it. The only change in my on-line affairs was the acquisition of a Samsung smartphone and creating a gmail accout (that I do not use).

    Tom,
It seems unlikely that it would be related to either of those events. I’m getting these on 3 email addresses (only one of which is a Gmail address).

    Hi,

i am seeing exactly the same e-mails. I am working on my PhD in physics. Maybe it is a trojan spy attempt of some country to fish tech people’s accounts/data?

    Cheers,
    Imran
